Distinguished Professor Karu Esselle Distinguished Professor Karu Esselle

Topic:

How to prepare a competitive research proposal

Karu is serving as an expert grant application assessor for the European Science Foundation and has served or serving grant funding agencies in many countries including Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, Finland, Australia, Hong Kong, Georgia, South Africa, and Chile. Nevertheless, like many young academics, Karu struggled to get his first large research grant when he was young but now he possesses an exceptional grant application success rate of 73% in the Australian Research Council Discovery scheme - one of the most competitive research grant schemes in the nation with a national success rate around 20%. In this presentation, Karu will discuss things he learnt when preparing his own grant proposals and what he looks for when assessing others’ grant proposals.

Biography:

Karu Esselle is a Distinguished Professor in Electromagnetic and Antenna Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). According to the 2019 Special Report on Research published by The Australian national newspaper, he was the National Research Field Leader in Australia in both Microelectronics and Electromagnetism.
