Fire Code Protection Requirements for Battery Energy Storage Systems NFPA 855

Energy Storage Systems – Fire safety concepts in the 2021 International Fire Code, 2021 Residential Code, 2021 NFPA 1 and 2020 NFPA 855
Energy storage systems are showing up in ever increasing numbers, which creates challenges for fire and building officials who must address a new generation of fire safety concerns. These systems include modern stationary battery systems, electrical capacitors systems and other technologies. This session provides an overview of where the requirements for these systems appear in the 2021 IFC, 2021 IRC and 2021 NFPA 1 as referenced from NFPA 855 Energy Storage Systems.

Learning Objectives:
1.    Recognize where to find the regulatory information in the 2021 IFC, IRC, NFPA 1 and NFPA 855 for Energy Storage Systems.
2.    Identify energy storage system types and hazards with emphasis on Lithium Batteries.
3.    Recognize concepts for protecting responders and workers from these energy systems.
4.    Introduce secondary battery market considerations.
