You do not need to go beyond Silicon Valley to realize the importance of intellectual property (IP) law in our economy. Ever wonder what exactly IP law is and how it could impact your new idea and business? Join us for an overview of the fundamentals of intellectual property to help engineers and entrepreneurs develop a working knowledge to protect and capitalize innovations, as well as to understand the associated legal risks.

This presentation will first introduce the major legal frameworks for IP - patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets - as well as the various advantages and drawbacks for each of those categories. Next, we will discuss the means by which you can protect inventions and at the same time, anticipate risks and liabilities from potential adversaries. Lastly, we will briefly review some hypothetical scenarios in which intellectual property issues may arise (e.g. who owns what) and some practical tips for a new inventor or a burgeoning business venture.

Patience Ren of Holland Law LLP

Patience Ren is a licensed patent attorney who focuses on complex patent disputes encompassing a wide range of industries including mobile device technologies, clean energy, biotechnologies, and pharmaceuticals.

Prior to joining Holland Law, Patience was a patent litigation associate at Latham & Watkins LLP and clerked for the Hon. Beth Labson Freeman in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. She had also previously worked at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP as a litigation associate. Prior to law school, Patience was a patent agent at Bozicevic, Field & Francis LLP, where she prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the fields of molecular array technology, enzyme engineering, and bioinformatics.

Before entering the legal field, Patience studied protein misfolding and its relationship to neurodegenerative diseases when she was a doctoral student at Stanford University. Patience applies her background as a scientist to analyze legal issues, and provide creative solutions specific to highly technical subject matter.

Clark Waldon

Clark Waldon is a licensed patent attorney who practices complex intellectual property and commercial litigation, on behalf of companies and individuals in a wide range of industries and disputes, including utility and design patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, unfair competition, and trade secret.

Prior to joining Holland Law, Clark worked as an intellectual property litigation associate at Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley PC and Tingley Law Group PC. While pursuing his law degree, Clark tailored his curriculum to align with his eventual legal practice by taking courses in intellectual property, biotechnology, patent litigation, privacy, international intellectual property, and assisted reproduction, genetic engineering, and cloning. Clark also served on the editorial board of the High Technology Law Journal. During law school, Clark interned at a boutique patent prosecution law firm, a digital product engineering services company, and a television software company working on patent portfolio management, prosecution, licensing, and litigation.

In addition to his legal and scientific background, Clark plays multiple instruments and writes and records original music. Clark’s technical and creative abilities provide him a first-hand appreciation for, and understanding of, his clients’ intellectual property and litigation needs, and give him an edge in finding and applying inventive strategies and solutions.
