Detection of static voltage instability using synchrophasors
When a power system is operating under unforeseen conditions or under unusually high stress, the system can face operational reliability problems from any of voltage instability, small-signal instability or transient instability phenomena. This seminar will focus on recent tools that have been developed at Washington State University for fast detection and mitigation of static voltage instability mechanisms using synchrophasors. Pattern recognition algorithms based on Support Vector Machine framework are applied for automatic processing of power-flow simulation studies towards defining PMU based voltage instability boundaries.
Biography: Prof. Mani V. Venkatasubramanian received his BE (Hons) in ELectrical and Electronics Engg from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India. Mani received his M.S. and D.Sc. in Systems Science and Mathematics from Washington University, St.Louis, MO, USA. He is presently working as a Professor in Electrical Engineering at Washington State University (WSU), Pullman, WA, USA. Mani served as an invited member of the North American task forces that studied the 1996 blackouts in the western power system and the 2003 Northeastern blackout. He has been active in development of PMU based wide-area monitoring and control methods since 1996. Real-time monitoring and control agorithms developed by Mani's team at WSU have been implemented in several North American power companies including Bonneville Power Administration, Tennessee Valley Authority and Entergy.
