This expert lecture describes a procedure to design a compact antenna with pattern diversity for Hand-held Terminal applications. The antenna is considered to be a two-port network using Yagi array, which is driven by a CPW-fed, balunless, dipole. The optimal design of pattern diversity antenna has been carried out using PSO. The printed dipole has been analyzed using PEEC. The current flowing on the dipole is similar to that of an asymmetrically fed dipole and a compact model is developed using common mode/differential mode model.

Pattern Diversity Antenna Design for Hand-held Terminals

A compact antenna with pattern diversity has been optimally designed. The antenna is a two-port network using Yagi array the driver element of which is a CPW-fed, balunless, dipole. The important characteristics of the antenna include: envelope correlation coefficient: 0.023; size: 65mm x 65mm at 2.45GHz; isolation between ports: 21.8dB; front-to-back ratio: 15.68 dB; and return loss BW: 165MHz. The optimal design of pattern diversity antenna has been carried out using PSO. The printed dipole has been analyzed using PEEC. The current flowing on the dipole is similar to that of an asymmetrically fed dipole and a compact model is developed using common mode/differential mode model.
