Fast and representative 3D models of maritime platforms: Pushing the boundaries of technology

Understanding the signature of a platform is critical to its survivability, especially in a world of proliferating advanced threat systems that are dependent on sensors for autonomously identifying targets. The signature of a platform is highly dependent on geometry and is influenced by small configuration changes. As such a fast and inexpensive method of RCS analysis is necessary to support changes through platform life and during operations, and effective RCS analysis is dependent on a highly representative 3D model of the platform of interest. The integration of commercial technologies (UAVs, photogrammetry) has given rise to a  capability for the fast generation of representative 3D models. The capability offers a real and necessary opportunity to improve survivability through greater self-awareness of a platform’s signature. This presentation outlines Shoal’s support to the Joint Survivability Tactics Validation Unit (JSTVU) and Defence, Science & Technology Group in realising this capability through the Phase 1 Feasibility Study, and provides a vision for the future of survivability.
