Betsy will share an initiative StrongHer that has begun while working with Senator Ellman to recruit and retain women in Tech. Having considered various concerns that turn young women away from considering careers in Tech, as well as concerns that cause women to leave careers in Tech, StrongHer has come up with a number of approaches to address those concerns. StrongHer is actively looking to engage more women from other Chicago area companies in tackling these issues and is pleased to have this opportunity to share ideas with the women of IEEE WIE and expand the collaboration.

Topic:

Betsy Covell brings to WIE, StrongHer

Betsy will share an initiative StrongHer has begun, working with Senator Ellman to recruit and retain women in Tech. Having considered various concerns that turn young women away from considering careers in Tech, as well as concerns that cause women to leave careers in Tech, StrongHer has come up with a number of approaches to address those concerns. Looking at how the stereotype of the Tech field has evolved over the years, from 'women's work' to '20 something anti-social dude living in his mom's basement', continuing to evolve that stereotype to include diversity and teamwork is a key objective. StrongHer is actively looking to engage more women from other Chicago area companies in tackling these issues and is pleased to have this opportunity to share ideas with the women of IEEE WIE and expand the collaboration.

Biography:

Betsy Covell has over 30 years with AT&T/Lucent/Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia, with most of that spent in wireless standards development. In that role, Betsy has worked on 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, and is now looking at 6G. During that time she has had the opportunity to learn from, work with, encourage, and mentor many excellent women around the globe. Betsy is currently Vice-Chair of StrongHer, an ERG for women at Nokia. She's been a strong advocate for women and girls outside of work as well, from 8 years as Girl Scout leader to now a Board member of 2 non-profits: Polished Pebbles, a girls mentoring program, and EverThrive Illinois, promoting healthcare for women, children, and families.

Agenda

Looking at how the stereotype of the Tech field has evolved over the years, from 'women's work' to '20 something anti-social dude living in his mom's basement', continuing to evolve that stereotype to include diversity and teamwork. This will be a fun filled sharing session. Do not miss it!
