We review the past two decades of fiber-optic communications and apply the learnings to extrapolate technology needs and solutions for the next two decades. We show that several key technologies are approaching fundamental and technological limits, which can only be overcome through massively integrated parallelism.

Peter Winzer Peter Winzer of Nubis Communications

Biography:

Peter Winzer received his Ph.D. from TU Vienna, Austria, in 1998, where he investigated space-borne Doppler lidar and laser communications. From 2000 to 2019 he was at Bell Labs, USA, where he contributed to fiber-optic communication systems and networks research and development. In 2020 he founded the start-up Nubis Communications. He has widely published and patented and is actively involved with the IEEE and OSA. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lightwave Technology (2013 to 2018) and chaired ECOC (2009) and OFC (2015/2017). Dr. Winzer is a Highly Cited Researcher, a Fellow of Bell Labs, IEEE, and OSA, and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He received multiple awards and holds an honorary doctorate from TU Eindhoven.
