Fabrication of biological circuits and bio-hybrid devices for the study of bio-electrical information processing
A living system consists of large number of interacting biological circuits which are made up of different types of cells, tissues and organs. Some examples of these “biological circuits†are: 1. The complex brain circuits involve in memory acquisition 2. Spinal cord motor circuits controlling the muscle movements 3. Sensory circuits sensing the external changes in the environment Modern biology is essentially the journey of understanding the development, functioning and pathology of such biological circuits. There are different biochemical, biophysical, cell biology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, molecular biology and structural biology tools to study these circuits. Recently, a new approach is evolving to study biological circuits. This new approach involves building biological circuits by integrating living cells, tissues and biomolecules (Biotic Component) with advanced biomaterials, bio-MEMS devices, micro-fluidics devices, solid-state electronic devices (Abiotic Component), so as to create “functional engineered biohybrid devices.†The central theme of my talk will be to discuss the different bioengineering strategies, challenges and caveats in fabricating different “mammalian biological circuits and bio-hybrid devicesâ€. In my presentation, I will be emphasizing the fabrication of three different biological circuits of the mammalian system. 1. Brain Circuits. 2. Stretch Reflex Arc (SRA) Circuit: 3. Retinal Circuit
