How to get involved in IEEE standards?
Industry standards activities provide a proven path to advancing technology implementation and commercialization, will attract industry and may have substantial impact to humanity. In this talk, we aim to share with the members of the IEEE Finland Section the value proposition and benefits of standards, and how the audiences would participate in the standards development activities in IEEE.
Edward Au (Senior Member, IEEE) is a Distinguished Engineer of Huawei Technologies Canada Co, Ltd. He is currently the Vice Chair and member-at-large of IEEE Technical Activities Board Committee on Standards (TAB CoS), which oversees the advancement and evangelization of technical standards activities across all IEEE Societies and Councils. He is also the Chair of Policies and Procedures of the IEEE Computer Society Standards Activities Board and a member of IEEE Educational Activities Board/Standards Association Standards Education Committee. He also actively participates and contributes to IEEE 802.11 Working Group. He is the founding Chair of the IEEE 802.11ay, which is aimed at developing an amendment for next generation unlicensed millimeter wave technologies for Wi-Fi, a co- editor of the IEEE 802.11 maintenance task group, which is chartered to develop revisions for the IEEE 802.11 standards, and an editor of the IEEE 802.11be, which focuses on developing a new major amendment for next generation Wi-Fi (a.k.a. Wi-Fi 7). He was awarded the IEEE Standards Association Standards Medallion this year “for exceptional leadership and skill in driving the development of IEEE 802.11™ Wireless LAN standards”.
Edward currently serves as a Senior Editor for IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, an Editor for IEEE Communications Standards Magazine, and an Editor for IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology. He was an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications and IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, a leading Guest Editor for IEEE Communications Magazine on a few occasions, and a Lead Track/Tutorial/Industry Forum Co-Chair of multiple IEEE-sponsored conferences. He was awarded the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology Top Editor Award in recognition of outstanding performance for paper reviews in both quantity and quality for the journal in 2013 and 2016.
An overview of 3GPP RAN standardization
In this brief introduction, we will present to the audience the principles and the structure of the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) Radio Access Network (RAN) standardization.
Dmitry Petrov (Senior Member, IEEE) is a senior standardization specialist at Nokia Standards, Finland. In his daily work, Dmitry is acting as a 3GPP standardization delegate, developing new technologies and seeking innovative solutions for the telecommunications industry. Currently, Dmitry is the chair of the IEEE Finland section.
He graduated holds Ph.D. degrees from M.V. Lomonosov Moscow state university (2010) and the University of Jyväskylä (2012). He received the title of adjunct professor in wireless networking technologies in 2016. The main areas of research interest for Dr. Petrov are a simulation of wireless networks, automation and application of ML-based techniques, and innovation in technology. He continues academic cooperation with several universities. Dr. Petrov is a co-author of more than 40 academic publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.
