S. Farokh Atashzar of New York University
A cross continental career trajectory in time and space through the pandemic toward being a professor of bioengineering
Biography:
S. Farokh Atashzar is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, also Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, in New York University, where he leads the Medical Robotics and Interactive Intelligent Technologies Lab. Atashzar is also with NYU Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP). Farokh received his master's degree in Iran and his PhD in Canada. He was a postdoctoral associate at Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics (CSTAR) Center in Canada and postdoctoral scientist at the department of bioengineering, Imperial College London, under a NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship Award. He developed his passion in science and diversity from very young ages. His research focus includes Medical (Surgical, NeuroRehabilitation, Assistive) Robotics, Biosignal Processing, and Human-machine Interface. He is the general chair of IEEE SPS PROGRESS initiative (Promote Diversity in Signal Processing), and he is the chair of the diversity subcommittee of IEEE SPS development and membership committee.
Alessandra Pedrocchi of Politecnico di Milano
The cultural and social challenge of promoting the professional value of parenthood
Biography:
Alessandra Pedrocchi, is associate professor and research leader of the Neuroengineering Section of the Nearlab at Politecnico di Milano. She has a master degree cum laude in Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Bioengineering. She currently teaches Neuroengineering to Master students and Medical Instrumentation to Undergraduate students of the Biomedical Engineering School at the Politecnico di Milano. She is co-author of more than 80 peer-reviewed papers, international conference proceedings and book chapters. Her research interests include: experimental and simulation studies on motor control and motor learning, with special focus on cerebellum network, and design of robots and neuroprostheses for the rehabilitation and assistance of neurological people. She was Project manager of MUNDUS (ICT FP7) and PI for POLIMI of REALNET (FET PROACTIVE FP7), EU Ms ART (LLL-FP7), and for a national Project (PRIN). She is currently PI for POLIMI for RETRAINER project (ICT IA H2020) and of the NIH Biofeedback grant (Eunice Kennedy Shriver).
