Inverter SPOV Functionality

Currently inverter based resources (IBRs), which act as a current regulated voltage source, are the majority of DER installations.  Due to their inherent difference in behavior, IEEE C62.92.6-2017 was developed and provides guidance relative to the amount of connected phase to ground load.  In addition IBRs have the benefit of typically include internal fast overvoltage protection mechanisms designed primarily to protect the inverter itself from damaging transients.  These mechanisms, referred to as Self Protection Over-Voltage (SPOV) mechanisms cause the inverter to cease to energize when the circuit voltage exceeds certain limits.  The SPOV mechanisms thus can prevent both GFOV, and load-rejection overvoltage (LROV).  The discussion will be focused on hardware in the loop testing that was performed to validate the performance and the impact to the grid during phase to ground faults
