Application for a Grant to Attend Quantum Activities at the 2022 International Microwave Symposium

To encourage the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and to attract graduate students working in the Quantum Technology Field who do not normally attend the Microwave Symposium, the IEEE MTT Society is offering 10 Graduate Student Travel Grants of $1000 each toward the cost to attend the Quantum Technology events at the IMS.  Interested graduate students, especially those in the physics field, are encouraged to apply by Feb 1st, 2022.

IMS Quantum Day

One of the themes of the 2022 edition of the International Microwave Symposium is Quantum. Quantum engineering is a fast-growing interdisciplinary field of research in which microwave and RF engineers can play an important role, especially in the areas of Quantum Sensing, Quantum Communications and in the Microwave Control of Quantum Computing platforms. While these topics have been covered in previous IMS editions, this year the quantum theme is prominent, with several dedicated events organized throughout the Microwave Week, starting with the Quantum Bootcamp on Sunday, quantum-themed workshops on Sunday and Monday, the Quantum Systems Day on Tuesday, and the QED-C meeting on Wednesday. Below is a brief description of these events.

Quantum Bootcamp (Sunday).  This course will introduce the basics of quantum engineering, targeting microwave engineers who want to understand how they can make an impact in this emerging field. The intended audience includes new engineers, engineers who may be changing their career path, marketing and sales professionals seeking a better understanding of quantum technology, as well as current college students looking to learn more about the practical aspects of Quantum technology. The speakers from industry and academia will present on a variety of topics including: Quantum Engineering basics, an overview of different quantum platforms and their most promising applications (sensing, communications and computing), an introduction to controlling and reading out quantum systems, and enabling technologies of the quantum ecosystem. The instructors are Matt Reagor (Rigetti), Thomas McConkey (IBM), Joe Aumentado (NIST), David Roy-Guay (SB Quantum), Thomas Jennewein (IQC/QEYSat), Patty Lee (Honeywell), and Nizar Messaoudi (Keysight Technologies).

The two Quantum Workshops on Sunday will be on (i) Rydberg atoms, and (ii) Cryogenic measurements, while the Quantum Workshop on Monday is titled “Microwave Techniques in the Quantum Information Sciences.” The speakers are Daniel Slichter (NIST), Glenn Jones (Rigetti Computing), Ofer Naaman (Google), Jongseok Park (Intel), Kiefer James Vermeulen (Delft Circuits), Linh Pham (MIT Lincoln Laboratory), Mollie Schwartz (MIT Lincoln Laboratory), and Austin Minnich (Caltech).

Tuesdays is Quantum Systems Day with several events spread throughout the day, starting with focus and contributed-paper sessions on “Cryogenic Microwave Devices and Measurement for Quantum Information” and on “Microwave control of quantum systems.”  We have received a record number of paper submissions on these topics. The keynote speaker is Dr. William Oliver from the MIT Lincoln Laboratory who will present recent developments on “….”

The Tuesday lunch-time Panel is on “The Right Way to Architect the Microwave Control for Quantum Computers.”  The confirmed speakers so far are Joe Bardin (Google), Stefano Pellerano (Intel), Oleg Mukhanov (Seeqc).

Microapps and Industry Workshop (Tuesday).  Scott and Nizar are coordinating. Need to get the details from IMS2022 on how this is organized and how the submission process work. Deadline is likely Dec, so need to move on this now.

Tuesday will wrap up with the Quantum System Day Reception which will take place in the Convention Center between 5 pm and 6:15 pm. The reception is open to all Quantum Day and QED-C attendees and will be a great opportunity for participants to get to meet in a relaxed atmosphere, exchange ideas, and establish new collaborations.
