Engineering education has witnessed an increase in the adoption of service-learning as pedagogy and an approach to building partnerships with local communities. Service-learning is defined as a credit-bearing educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflects on the service activity. Service-learning prepares students with 21st-century competencies through the opportunities to critique, identify, collaborate and solve real-time problems. Prior research has reportedly identified that service-learning experiences and guided reflections help students understand their discipline, develop an enhanced sense of civic responsibility, and benefit the community. The development of civic outcomes among students is also emphasized in Indian National Education Policy which envisions an education system that would instill ethics, human, and constitutional values among the students.

                                               

This 4-week workshop is designed for engineering faculty who have expressed interest in initiating service-learning programs in their institution and starting community engagement. Each week of the program will focus on various important aspects such as initiation, design, implementation, and evaluation of service-learning courses in the engineering curriculum. Participants will be expected to attend a 1-hour virtual session every week and will be provided with weekly assignments that will guide them through the process of implementing service learning in their respective institutions All the assignments will be a part of a design workbook which the participants will be encouraged to use to make notes and solve weekly alignments from the faculty development program.

Biography:

Dr. Rohit Kandakatla has completed his Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University and is currently serving as the Director for Strategy, Operations, and Human Resource Development at KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology. He also has an adjunct faculty appointment with the Center for Engineering Education Research at KLE Technological University. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication and Masters in Embedded Systems. His research interests include education policy, service-learning, understanding organizational change in higher education, and integration of technology and entrepreneurship in engineering education. He was awarded Young Engineering Educator Scholarship by National Science Foundation (NSF), IUCEE Young Leader Award for the year 2015, and IGIP SPEED Young Scientist Award for the year 2014. He previously served as the President of the Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED) and the Vice-President for Student Engagement of the International Federation for Engineering Education Societies (IFEES) where he has led many student-based initiatives to help solve engineering education issues at the local and global level.

Program Outcomes

At the end of the 4-week program, participants will be able to

  • Initiate and forge partnerships with communities that are built around mutual respect, trust, and reciprocal relationships.
  • Design a new service-learning course or integrate service-learning into an existing engineering course.
  • Guide students to use the human-centered design as an approach to solving problems identified in the partner communities.
