5G millimeterwave antennas and circuits using substrate integrated coaxial line (SICL) technology
With the rapid development of 5Gmillimeter wave technologies, research on designing high-frequency circuits with low loss, ease of fabrication process, high power handling capability, good electromagnetic shielding, etc. are of prime interest nowadays. Both microstrip-based planar technology and waveguide-based non-planar technology are extensively used to meet these requirements but all of them have limitations in terms of application. Recently a new technology named “substrate integrated coaxial line” has emerged as a potential candidate for realizing mm-wave circuits and systems. The technology implements conducting sidewall in the planar substrate by using rows of metallic vias or plated through-hole (PTH) and thus a completely shielded transmission line is realized in the planar substrate with its inherent advantages such as high Q, low loss, higher power handling capability, etc. The current talk is focused on an introduction to SICL technology and its application in antennas and circuits for microwave and millimeter-wave applications.
