UPDATED:The February 28, 2022 Registration cut-off time has been changed to an earlier time (from 6:00pm to 12:00pm).

IEEE R2 Women in Engineering (WIE) 2022 Kick-off Meeting. Everyone is invited and welcomed! The first part of the meeting is adminstrative and reporting.  We look forward to hearing from our eleven WIE Affinity Group (AG)Chairs (or designated persons) and four Area Task Leads!

Following the reports, our guest speaker, Dr. Yuji Zhang will have a presentation entitled, "From Big Data to Precision Medicine: a Data Science Perspective." Yuji will also be sharing her career journey. She has a BS and MS in Biomedical Engineering from Southeast University, China and a PhD in Computer Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA.

Topic:

From Big Data to Precision Medicine: A Data Science Perspective

Precision medicine is data science driven. In this talk, Dr. Zhang will give an overview of the history of precision medicine and share her career journey focusing on developing multi-dimensional computational approaches to reveal novel human disease mechanisms. She will also discuss the opportunities and challenges precision medicine faces in the next decade and how the data scientist role continues to evolve as AI takes hold and domain knowledge becomes paramount in biomedical research.

Biography:

Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on developing translational biostatistics and informatics approaches to reveal novel human disease mechanisms. Specifically, she has over 20 years of research experience in integrative analysis of multi-source high-dimensional biological data for novel association discovery between different biological entities under different biological states. Dr. Zhang has extensive collaborative research experience in medical informatics, ontology, software engineering, biomedical and basic science fields. Her research mission is to leverage the gap between the analytical needs of arising from multi-source biological “big” data in biomedical research and advanced informatics approaches. As the lead of the bioinformatics core at University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Zhang has been serving as co-principal investigator/co-investigator leading the bioinformatics and statistical analyses in numerous federal funded research projects in cancer research. She has collaborated with researchers in various disease areas leading to over 70 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Zhang has also been actively mentoring numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. She has also been organizing/co-organizing several international workshops in the informatics field since 2012. Dr. Zhang is a member of several professional societies, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB).
