SIGNON-The Awareness Session about Computer Society

The Awareness Session on IEEE Computer Society was organized by the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch, University of Ruhuna targeting the undergraduates, especially the freshers, who have just started their journey, in order to let them know about IEEE and the Computer society. The main intention of the session was the awareness of the students on Computer Society about the benefits of getting the membership, advantages for the future career etc. The event was held on the 20th of February, 2022 at 07.00 pm via zoom platform. Students from many faculties at University of Ruhuna joined the event. The event was a huge success with more than 100 participants on the zoom platform.

The resource person of the session was Mr. Chamika Sudusinghe, who is the current Chair of the Student Activities Committee, IEEE Sri Lanka Section. At first, Mr. Chamika gave a brief introduction about himself and how he joined to IEEE and his experience on IEEE since the beginning of his career. Before conducting the session on Computer Society, he gave a brief explanation on IEEE. He denoted that, since IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, it’s important to get to know about the society and being part of it or working for IEEE is a rewarding experience for professionals from a variety of disciplines. Furthermore, he evoked the importance of the IEEE membership for students’ careers.

After the explanation on IEEE, Mr. Chamika moved into the topic of IEEE Computer Society.  There, he focused on the points in the annual reports of IEEE Computer Society and as same as, exhibited everyone how to refer to the website of IEEE Computer Society by keeping awaking its projects, research, new technologies, magazines etc. He elucidated the speciality of IEEE CS, as it has some technical committees that other societies do not have and denoted the students how they can be a part of those committees.  Moreover, the speaker excerpted the scholarships and awards that the students can apply through the IEEE CS.

Afterwards, the resource person emphasized the fund granting programmes in IEEE CS, as to how everyone can be a part of the Chapter Startup Fund in order to initiate new chapters and then how to get offers in the Chapter Grants Program likewise. When talking about the memberships, Mr Chamika denoted that getting the membership of any IEEE society is not necessary and the beginners can be a part of the student branch chapters at first and get the membership then if they feel free when moving forward. 

After that, he winded up his session by thanking the organizing committee for inviting him for this session and as same as for all the participants for being hanging with him throughout the session. It was a great session and the speaker shared a lot of experiences that he has got from IEEE and Computer Society. Many participants were very interactive and discussed many questions with him. With the massive support of everyone, this session became a great opportunity for everyone to get a clear awareness of the aspects, career developments and membership benefits of the IEEE Computer Society.

Mr Chamika Sudusinghe

Mr. Chamika Sudusinghe is the current Chair of the Student Activities Committee, IEEE Sri Lanka Section. Also, he is a final year undergraduate from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of University of Moratuwa. Furthermore, he was the Student Representative of IEEE Sri Lanka for the term 2020/21. Mr Chamika has been an active volunteer of IEEE since 2017 and was part of many of the projects that were carried out at both the university level and national level. He became the first IEEE student volunteer in Sri Lanka to win the Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship award for his volunteering accomplishment.
