This online seminar will be held to discuss, in general, the history of power generation in Lebanon and the reasons behind the current severe rationing. Dr. Walid Al-Deghaili is currently an independent consultant. However, he has extensive experience as Chief of Energy Section, at United Nations-ESCWA and as an employee for 33 years at “Electricite du Liban".

Biography:
Dr. Walid Al-Deghaili
Holder of: a degree in Electro-mechanical Engineering, certificates in Classic
Thermodynamics and in Thermodynamics and Material’s Properties, and a PhD in Engineering from the University of Claude Bernard/ Lyon 1 in France.
During the period 1979-2019, Professor at ISSAE Beirut associated to CNAM Paris.
During 2009-2013, Chief of Energy Section, at United Nations-ESCWA.
During the period 1974-2008 Worked for 33 years at the “Electricite du Liban
(EDL)”. He has, for over a 17-year period, occupied the positions of Director of Studies, Director
of Generation, Director of Rehabilitation and Director of Equipment. . Acted as EDL’s
representative and member of the board of directors at the “Observatoire Mediterranean de
l’Energie (OME)” and was Lebanon’s representative in ESCWA’s Committee on Energy. Acted
as EDL’s representative in the meetings of the Electrical Interconnections Projects between
Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Jordan Libya and Egypt, and in the meetings of the League of Arab
States related to electricity issues. Was assigned a coordination role in the 1990s with the World
Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the Arab Fund for Socio-Economic Development, and
the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development. Participated in several meetings of
(UNIPED), and (CIGRE), as well as in numerous national, regional and global meetings which
addressed the issues of electricity, renewable energy and energy efficiency, to which he presented
several studies and working papers.
Lectured for 45 years on the topics of renewable energies, thermodynamics, electricity
generation and transmission/grid, and electricity economics at Engineering Faculties in
Lebanon
