Significance of International Women’s Day and Need for Gender Equality

In this talk the speaker will focus on the evolution of International women’s day historically, cite few inspiring women and their achievements, talk about the under-representation of women (some statistics), the current status of women, gentle suggestions to women, gentle suggestions to the management, conclusions. The Role of Women in Engineering with reference to IEEE activities. The Role of women as entrepreneurs, start-up, innovation and incubation centers. Further the role of women in Reliability and Quality aspects of product development in various fields.

Biography:

Swarna BaiArniker received her M.Sc. in Applied Electronics in first class with distinction and a university topper from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India and M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from I.I.T.(Kanpur), India. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She is a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) from American Society for Quality (ASQ). She is currently working as a Scientist ‘F’, and Group Head Space Quality & Reliability (QRG) in the Directorate of Special Projects (DSP), Defence Research & Development Organization (D.R.D.O.), Government of India, Hyderabad, India. She has 21 years of R&D experience in DRDO in the field of Ring Laser Gyro Electronics and signal Processing and 7 Years experience as QA, Space systems in DRDO. She has published 13 papers in international conferences and 13 papers at national level.

She received best paper award in IEEE INDICON 2011, Hyderabad, India, 16-18 December 2011. As a team member she also received DRDO Award for Path Breaking Research/Outstanding Technology Development-2011. She also received Award in recognition of excellent contribution in the field of development of sensors as a member of Team Electro Optical Instruments Research academy (ELOIRA)., Hyderabad, India in the year 2011 and 2012 respectively. She received IEEE Computational Intelligence Society 2017 outstanding chapter ward as a vice chair. She received DRDO Award for Performance Excellence in 2019. She also received Technology Group Award from DSP lab in 2021.

She served as Secretary, Women in Engineering & Computer Science (WIE) an IEEE student branch, at University of Windsor, Canada in 2008-2010. She served as a reviewer for many international conferences and journals. She is served as Executive editor, ANMOL the first women’s magazine in DRDO published by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad. She is a member IEI, senior member of IEEE, member of WIE-IEEE, IEEE Reliability Society, APCBEES (senior member), and life member sensors society of India. She is fellow IETE. She served as Vice-chair, Chair women in Engineering (WIE)-Affinity Group IEEE Hyderabad section. She also served as vice-chair Computational Intelligence Society chapter IEEE Hyderabad section. Presently she is serving as Secretary Reliability Society Chapter IEEE Hyderabad section. She visited advanced laboratories in Germany as a member of Indian scientist delegation in May 2013.

Her research interest includes Quality Control, Quality Assurance of space systems, and Reliability studies, Artificial neural networks, DNA sequence analysis, promoter prediction. She gives inspiring talks to motivate students, faculty and employees to pursue science as career in various platforms.
