Profile Building for the Modern Researcher with the Aid of Technology
Speaker: Prof. Michael Milford
Title: Profile Building for the Modern Researcher with the Aid of Technology
Abstract: Branding and profile building is an entirely optional but often highly beneficial (to your career) component of being a modern researcher and academic. In this talk I’ll highlight the key motivations for why you might consider doing so, including a frank assessment of the potential downsides. I’ll take you on a tour through many of the standard social media channels for increasing the reach and impact of what you do, as well as growing your “personal brand”, including Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and websites. I’ll provide pointers on how to do this efficiently, including sourcing photo and video material, professional graphics content, and composition. I’ll touch on a range of useful techniques or tools to have in your toolchest, including testimonials, catchy visuals, and your portable technology setup. The talk will be packed with specific, concrete practical examples and advice, as well as some higher level concepts.
