Dr Suresh Reddy of Caterpillar Inc.'s Advanced Power Products Group
Advanced Control Systems Application Examples in Industry and Energy Transition
The lecture will highlight specific advanced control topics based on Suresh Reddy’s academic and industrial experience. The topics will range from discussion of how Time Delay Control can be applied in developing a new way of PI control design for linear and nonlinear control systems; multivariable control and optimization problems with examples from manufacturing, locomotives and microgrids; Challenges in energy transition currently underway to combat climate change and play for control systems as enabler in mitigating such challenges, along with various new energy sources and energy storage devices.
Biography:
Dr. Suresh Reddy is Chief Engineer for Electric Power Conversion & Control in Caterpillar Inc.'s Advanced Power Products Group. He has been at Caterpillar Inc. for over 17 years, and currently leading technology and product developments and strategy at Caterpillar for microgrids, energy storage systems, inverters for various power sources and related control systems. He has led electric power conversion strategy, and NTI developments for electrification. In prior roles as Engineering Manager and 6 Sigma Black Belt, he led the development of Caterpillar's electric drive system for mining trucks. Prior to joining Caterpillar Inc., Suresh Reddy worked at General Electric for over 11 years, in Global Research and GE Transportation divisions, in various roles as Senior Engineer and Engineering Manager, leading control systems developments for locomotive traction, engine and auxiliary control systems, as well as various industrial and process control systems. He received Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA and M.S. from The Ohio State University, in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in dynamics and control. He has a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He holds 13 U.S. patents and several publications related to various control systems, electric drive, microgrids and hybrid systems.
