On Semantic Coding and Semantic Communication

Abstract: For decades, modern communications have usually been designed to pursue a higher bit-level precision and fewer bits for transmitting a message. It is the right time to give a rethinking on these two fundamental features. Here, we introduce the advantage and scheme of semantics that take advantage of a new kind of semantics-aware communication framework, incorporating both the semantic encoding and the semantic communication approaches. In particular, after analyzing the underlying defects of existing semantics-aware techniques, we establish a transformer-based adaptation mechanism for the semantic coding issues and put forward several novel semantic communication solutions with incremental-knowledge enhanced HARQ, which endow a communications system the adaptation ability to convey the semantics instead of pursuing the bit level accuracy. On top of these technical contributions, we provide a new insight to understand how the semantics are processed and represented in an integrated semantics-aware coding and communication system, and verifies the significant benefits of doing so. Targeting at the next-generation (6G) semantics-aware communication, a number of critical concerns and open challenges such as the semantic networking, information overhead, meta-language, and implementation cost are also discussed and envisioned.

Biography:

张宏纲,之江实验室Intelligent Computing(《智能计算》)期刊执行主编,浙江大学信息与电子工程学院兼任教授,长期从事无线通信与网络、人工智能、认知通信、绿色通信、复杂网络等领域的研究。曾任法国大学联盟UEB暨法国高等电力学院杰出讲座教授、英国约克大学名誉客座教授以及英国约克大学-浙江大学认知网络与绿色通信联合实验室共同主任。曾任IEEE通信学会认知网络技术委员会主席(IEEE TCCN Chair)以及IEEE OnlineGreen Comm2015等国际会议主席。2014年,获选为第四批“浙江省重点科技创新团队”,担任团队负责人。 2018年,担任国家工业和信息化部(工信部)通信科学技术委员会委员。2021年,获得IEEE通信学会2021年度杰出论文奖(2021 IEEE Communications Society Outstanding Paper Award) 、IEEE传感器委员会2021年度IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IoT-J) 最佳论文奖(IEEE IoT-J Best Paper Award)。
