Prof. Juan M. Martín-Sánchez of Adaptive Predictive Expert Control ADEX S.L.,

Topic:

Optimized Adaptive Control & Industrial Applications

The tutorial will start by introducing the basis of variable estimation and process modeling that has enabled the introduction of digital technology. Next, based on these concepts, it will define the principle of predictive control as was formally stated in an international patent. From the principle of predictive control, the concept of optimized control will be derived, but since it requires precision in the prediction of variables, adaptation becomes essential to the time‐varying nature of industrial processes. Thus, the tutorial will introduce and define adaptive predictive (AP) control methodology and will go inside the AP controller to explain its operation step by step. At this point, the tutorial will illustrate all these concepts by using a real time simulation scenario. The audience will observe the evolution of simulated processes with different cause‐effect dynamic relationships and will be able to compare, in a practical way, the performance of conventional and adaptive predictive controllers in the presence of changes in the simulated process dynamics. This will demonstrate how the adaptive part of the AP controller becomes essential in achieving optimized control and fully justifies the tutorial title of ‘Optimized Adaptive Control’. However, the AP controller may become fragile when facing the complexity of certain industrial processes. The tutorial will explain this kind of fragility and how it is possible to overcome it by adding an expert component to the controller structure. This expert component will allow the controller to use available process knowledge in order to improve its robustness, stability and overall performance. Thus, the tutorial will introduce the methodology of Adaptive Predictive Expert control, named ADEX, which nowadays is capable of overcoming the limitations of conventional control systems currently used in industry. ADEX methodology is usually applied by means of a software platform named ADEX COP (Control & Optimization Platform) which simplifies the development and application of optimized control systems. The industrial implementation of these systems helps maximize process productivity, minimize energy consumption and emissions and, thus, they represent a valuable tool for the control of climate change and achievement of sustainable economic growth. The tutorial will end with the presentation of optimized control implementations in power generation, water treatment plants and cement works, among other types of complex industrial processes. The tutorial, delivered in a conceptual, but intuitive and understandable language, is aimed at those interested in process control, which could be defined as the ‘intelligence of technology

Biography: Juan M. Martín-Sánchez (F’ 09) obtained the title of
Industrial Engineer in 1970, and Doctor Industrial Engineer in
1974, both from the Polytechnic University of Catalunya
(UPC). From 1971 to 1976, his research activities were
continued at Grenoble and Toulouse Universities in France, at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Charles
Stark Draper Laboratory in the United States, and the
University of Alberta in Canada. In 1976, he filed the first
patent for predictive and adaptive predictive control, and
subsequently he obtained 3 additional international patents for
both control methodologies.
In 1986, he founded the company SCAP Europa which went on to carry out more
than 150 industrial applications of the adaptive predictive control methodology between
1986 and 1998. In 1999 Martín-Sánchez founded the company Adaptive Predictive
Expert Control ADEX S.L., of which he is currently the President. This company
develops optimization projects based on adaptive predictive expert control in industrial
areas such as chemical, petrochemical, energy, cement, metallurgy, naval, aerospace,
environment and climatization.
He has authored more than 100 publications and three books on adaptive
predictive control, has given plenary sessions at important international conferences,
seminars and congresses, and has been a member of the editorial board of the
International Journal of Control. He has been a professor at the UPC, the University of
Alberta and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In addition to his role as President at
ADEX, S.L., he is also currently a full professor at the Universidad Nacional de
Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid (Open University of Spain).
Between January 2004 and January 2009, he has been President of the IEEE Joint
Spanish Chapter of the Industrial Applications Society (IAS) and the Control Systems
Society (CCS). In 2005 and 2007 under his Presidency, the Chapter organized two
Seminars of Advanced Industrial Control Applications (SAICA). These events took place
with great success in the “Fundación Gómez-Pardo” in Madrid. In January 2009, Dr.
Martín-Sánchez was elevated to the grade of IEEE Fellow for his “Contributions to the
Adaptive Predictive Control methodologies”.
