Title: The evolution of population modeling through the lens of science and engineering advances

Abstract:

Understanding how people inhabit the world is a foundational piece of information for addressing critical issues facing the world today. From sustainability to human health and security, accurate and detailed information about how and where people spend their time is essential for effective situational preparedness and response, as well as making valuable long-term policy decisions. This is particularly critical as population pressures on resources, energy, and the environment are combining with rapid cultural, social, and technological change to produce new sources of deprivation and instability in the world. Census data have been a traditional means by which to model and map populations, yet these data have limitations for analyses. For example, census data are representative of where people live, and thus only capture the residential human footprint rather than the full space of human activity. Furthermore, many areas of the world have outdated censuses, and even where these efforts are more current, areas of rapid growth or change (e.g. conflict, disasters, or other crises) will not be accurately reflected. This seminar will present longstanding research and development efforts at the nexus of geoscience, computer science, and social science to produce highly resolved models representing how humans populate the world in space and time, to include essential geographies such as non-permissive environments or data poor areas.

Biography:

Amy Rose is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Geospatial Science and Human Security Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Rose has been in the field of geospatial science and technology for over 25 years, having started her career at a university research center engaging in logistics and transportation research. From there she transitioned to a Fortune 500 company where she led enterprise geospatial systems development and deployment for environmental assessment and infrastructure characterization applications. Dr. Rose has been at ORNL since 2007, during which time her work has been primarily focused on geocomputational methods for characterizing human dynamics and the built environment at scale to inform a variety of applications including human health and security, urban resiliency, and environmental impacts. Dr. Rose is currently the director for the LandScan Population Distribution program which combines multi-modal data fusion, statistical approaches, and machine learning algorithms for highly resolved global mapping of human population.
