This brief talk will introduce you to IEEE SOCIETY ON SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY – SSIT. We will cover SSIT’s interest in the core impacts of technology on society and what we as IEEE members can do to ensure that the focus of our involvement in technology is for the benefit of society as a whole. The IEEE organization has adopted a version of SSIT’s message as the tagline for the entire organization: Advancing Technology for Humanity. We will briefly look at the history and achievements and ongoing activities of the SSIT, specifically here in Australia and the region.

Introduction to IEEE SOCIETY ON SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY – SSIT

Biography:

Mark began his career in digital technology as a linguist, telecommunications specialist and research analyst with the US government in divided Berlin during the Cold War. There he worked with one of the world’s first supercomputers.

He is a Life Member of the IEEE, currently serving on the IEEE Society for the Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) as a Coordinator for Darwin. He has served on academic advisory boards of universities in Australia and overseas primarily advising on information security curriculum. He delivered the first post-graduate course in cryptography and key management at Monash University.  

Mark received the Information Security Leadership Award from (ISC)2 in 2007 and served on the Board of Directors of the Singapore ISACA Chapter over a four year period. He is currently advising the Northern Territory Government on IT and information security.
