Introduction of Battery Management System

Lithium-ion battery is undoubtedly the key player in the
current global electrification transition. Beside its
advantages of higher energy density and volumetric
density, it is also more volatile compared to traditional
lead-acid batteries. Therefore, proper management and
control of lithium-ion batteries using an embedded
system called battery management system or BMS is
necessary. On the one hand, BMS closely monitors each
individual cell in the battery pack via various sensors to
estimate battery internal status. On the other hand, BMS
timely communicate with other electronic control units
(ECU), e.g. inverter, vehicle control unit, in the system to
prevent abusing conditions that could accelerate battery
degradation or even trigger catastrophic battery
thermal runaway. This seminar will provide an
introduction of BMS with some further explanation on the
BMS algorithm and software development.
