This seminar will focus on modern electronic support (ES) and electronic attack (EA) techniques using deep learning methods. In the afternoon session, we begin with an examination of persistent spectrum sensing and signal detection methods starting with an examination of both centralized and decentralized electromagnetic spectrum sensing techniques. We will continue with an overview of how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques are being used in transceivers for EMW. This includes model and data parallel training techniques for both centralized and decentralized architectures.

We follow with an overview on important deep learning techniques that go beyond neural networks (NN). These include autoencoders, convolutional NN, long-, short-term memories, restricted and deep Boltzmann machines and generative adversarial networks. We focus on their use for EA applications including how DRFM and UAVs in a tactical environment can develop a deep learning control strategy. Transfer learning and the importance of federated learning is also addressed. Different types of EA applications include obscuration-EA, deception-EA, and target-EA. We conclude with an examination of the proper clutter coefficients for deception

Dr. Phillip Pace is a Technical Advisor for ESC, Fairfax VA and a distinguished professor (emeritus) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).  He has recently taught as an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University, (SMU) Dallas, TX and was recently a senior scientist at L3Harris Technologies, Plano, TX for over two years.
He earned his Ph.D. in 1990 from University of Cincinnati after receiving his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ohio University - all in electrical and computer engineering. Dr. Pace also has several years of industry experience on Radar Systems both at Hughes Aircraft Company and General Dynamics. He is the founding director of the NPS Center for Joint Services Electronic Warfare (CJSEW) and has served as the ECE Associate Chair for Research. He was the Technical Editor, IEEE Trans. on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (2013 – 2020), and an IEEE Life Fellow. He is the author of four textbooks, listed on 11 patents, has published numerous technical articles and is an award-winning, life-time member of the AOC.
