As the world faces the economic, environmental, and political consequences of its heavy dependence on fossil fuels for energy, the search for a suitable alternative only grows more intense. The collection of solar energy through photovoltaic (PV) cells is a particularly promising technology. Sunshine is an abundant resource, while PV technology is clean, quiet, and suitable for distributed installations near points of load.

The vast growth of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation systems has led to new trends in integrated PV systems. The AC PV module is one of these trends where a PV panel and a micro‐inverter are integrated into a single AC PV source. This reduces installation complexity and provides for a true plug‐n‐play PV system. This seminar will introduce the system architecture and design considerations of AC PV modules.

Biography: Dr. Hussam Alatrash received his BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan, Amman in 2003. He received his MSEE, and PhD degrees from the University of Central Florida (UCF), in 2005 and 2007, respectively. His research focused on power electronics and controls algorithm for solar energy applications. He then became a co‐founder of Petra Solar, Inc.

Petra Solar, founded in 2006, is the pioneer of SunWave™ systems, a grid‐tied, pole‐mounted, distributed solar generation system. The SunWave system combines solar energy with mart‐grid communications and electric grid enhancement functions to create a comprehensive utility grade solution for utilities. Investors have demonstrated confidence in Petra Solar, providing $54 million in private capital since 2007.
