November Talk: Integrated Sensing and Communication for 6G

The work aims to unify sensing and communication, two similar, yet traditionally separated, wireless systems, in order to facilitate direct tradeoffs between them while making mutual performance gains. The integration of sensing and communication is of critical importance to next generation networks. The sensing functionality, and the corresponding ability of the network to collect sensory data from the environment enable learning the rapidly changing combat environment.  Capitalizing on recent works on full-duplex communication, we will propose simultaneously sensing target parameters and data communication over the same frequency bandwidth. The proposed systems detect the echoes in order to sense the presence of reflecting targets while transmitting communication data.

Biography:

Dr. Besma Smida is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Smida got her undergraduate degree from Higher School of Communication of Tunis, and later Master and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Quebec in Montreal in Canada in 1998 and 2006, respectively.  From 1999 to 2015, she held several research and academic positions in Rogers Wireless in Montreal in Canada, Harvard University, and Purdue University in the US, before she joined University of Illinois at Chicago in 2015.

Dr. Smida’s research focuses on the area of Wireless Communication Theory. She currently serves as Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS, Editor of the IEEE OPEN JOURNAL OF THE COMMUNICATIONS SOCIETY and Lead Guest Editor for the SENSORS OPEN ACCESS JOURNAL.

She was the recipient of the award of the INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine’s “100 Inspiring Women in STEM” in 2015, Academic Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada in 2007, and the NSF CAREER award in 2015. Moreover, Dr. Smida is a distinguished speaker of IEEE Communication Society of 2022, and currently she serves as North America Region 4 Representative.
