Dear IEEE Kitchener-Waterloo Section Members,

 

On behalf of the IEEE Kitchener-Waterloo Section, we are pleased to welcome you to 2022 IEEE Kitchener-Waterloo Section Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Dinner event, which is the first in-person AGM after COVID. This year’s AGM is a great occasion to get together with friends and celebrate the achievements of the Kitchener-Waterloo Section, made possible by its dedicated volunteers and members.

Biography:

Bio: Dr. Tom Murad, President – Elect. (2022- 2023) of IEEE Canada & Director Elect. IEEE – R7. A member of Engineering Order of Honour - Professional Engineers Ontario “PEO", is a respected Technology leader, thinker, Board Member, an award-winning Educator, and distinguished speaker on the topics of: Engineering, Technology, Leadership, and technical talents / skills development and education.

In 2010, Joined Siemens in Canada, prior to his role as the “Country Lead of Engineering & Technical Excellence at Siemens Mobility (since 2019), he led the “Engineering, Technology & Academics” for Siemens Canada. Prior to joining Siemens, Tom held different roles as Vice President, Senior VP and COO for many years with an extensive career in various Professional Engineering, Technical and Executive Management of Innovative Technical Operations including Academic and R&D work in Electrical power, Industrial Controls and Automation.

Dr. Murad holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronics), and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Power Electronics and Industrial Controls from Loughborough University of Technology in the UK, with a Leadership Program Certificate from Schulich Business School, York University in Ontario, Canada.

The Energy Transition in Canada and Ontario

Abstract: The talk will provide an overview of Canadian provincial and remote community grids, and a more detailed discussion of Ontario’s power grid, market, and future expansion plans, from an emissions perspective. A critical overview of the decarbonization status and policies for energy systems in Canada will be also presented, focusing on EV, zero emissions, and Hydrogen plans and strategies to enable a Net-Zero 2050.

Biography:

Bio: Dr. Claudio Cañizares is a University Professor, Hydro One Chair, and the WISE Executive Director at the University of Waterloo, where he has been since 1993. His highly-cited research focuses on modeling, simulation, computation, stability, control, and optimization of power and energy systems. He is the IEEE Trans. Smart Gird EIC; Director of the IEEE and PES Boards; a Fellow of the IEEE, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering; and has received the 2017 IEEE PES Outstanding Educator Award, the 2016 IEEE Canada Electric Power Medal, and multiple awards and recognitions from PES technical committees.
