IEEE Young Professionals and Women in Engineering of the Australian Capital Territory Section are pleased to host a panel discussion on “Future-proofing your career in STEM”. This panel discussion brings together leading professionals from industry, academia, and government to share the experiences and stories in their career journey. The panel will also discuss topics such as emerging skills that graduates need to succeed in a new professional environment, the importance of soft and technical skills, networking, challenges present for fresh graduates, Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and PhDs in the workforce of STEM disciplines.

The event will be held in a hybrid format: physical location in the Australian National University and virtual on Zoom and is open to all. The discussion will be open for questions and discussions with the panellists, so please don’t hesitate to bring your questions.

Panellists:

Natasha Sinclair is a Principal Analyst in the Sector Coupling team at AEMO, where she focusses on energy system integration between gas, electricity and transport sectors, in the development of AEMO’s energy market forecasts. She has responsibility for Electric Vehicles and incorporation of hydrogen and biomethane in long term forecasts, and contributes to multi-sector modelling which informs the Integrated System Plan. Her passion for the energy transition drove her to complete the Masters of Energy Systems in 2019, following a 27 year career in the oil and gas sector, and she has been a key contributor to the Integrated System Plan in the areas of stakeholder engagement, transmission costs and power system collaboration with distribution networks.

Dr. Xiuping Jia (Fellow, IEEE) received the B. Eng. degree from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beijing, China, in 1982 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from The University of New South Wales, Australia, in 1996. She is an Associate Professor with the School of Engineering and Information Technology, The University of New South Wales, Canberra, Australia. Her research interests include remote sensing, machine learning, and spatial data analysis. Dr. Jia has authored and co-authored more than 270 publications, addressing various topics including data correction, feature reduction, and image classification. She is the co-author of the remote sensing textbook titled Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis [Springer-Verlag, 3rd (1999) and 4th (2006) eds.]. She is a Subject Editor for the Journal of Soils and Sediments, and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

Dr. Xiang Wu received the B. Eng. degree, Master Degree, and PhD from the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia in 2012, 2014, and 2018 respectively. He is currently a Senior Research Engineer at Dolby Laboratories, Sydney. Five years' experience in developing audio rendering, HRTF modelling, and audio/acoustic signal processing. He is now working in Consumer Entertainment Group in Dolby and developing playback technoligies.
