Erik Westgard, NY9D

Topic:

Tower Generator Trailers for Event and EmComm Use

  • Hams in Minnesota have been providing volunteer medical communications at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon for almost 40 years.
  • Starting around 2011, we built and deployed an open-source mesh network linking hospitals, fire stations, and government command trucks across our core cities.
  • The ability to offer medical applications, dashboards, and even live video has been useful to our served agencies in recent years.

Erik has graciously supplied his slides -- you can get them inside the club's Collabratec Workspace.

Biography:

  • Erik is the Chair of Medical Communications at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.  He was instrumental in the construction of the MN Statewide Packet Network, MN Statewide D-Star Network and Reflector 632A, and a Part 15 5 GHz mesh network covering both cities as well as several repeaters.
  • He is a regular contributor to the ARRL EmCom Newsletter, as well as QST and CQ Magazines and the TAPR Journal.   He has spoken at Dayton on EmCom and QRP topics and at TAPR.
  • His most recent project is organizing the purchase of fifteen 30’ class tower generator trailers, and his group now has a formal Ham Radio relationship with MNVOAD.   Erik is a retired AT&T Principal Consultant and is a Senior Community Faculty member in the College of Management at Metropolitan State University.
