This presentation will cover the work of the IEEE Ad Hoc Committee to Coordinate IEEE’s Response to Climate Change (CCIRCC), which has made significant strides in placing the IEEE a prime mover in enhancing the role of Engineers, worldwide, to mitigate and adapt to Climate change.

Working with leading engineering organisations the IEEE took a significant stand at the UN Climate Change Conference- COP-27, and made a number of presentations, indicating way forward.

Biography:

Tariq Durrani is Research Professor at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Scotland. From 2000-2006 he was Deputy Principal responsible for Staff Development, Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Centre for Lifelong Learning and the University’s IT and computing infrastructure. His research covers Communications, Signal Processing, Artificial Intelligence and Technology Management. He has authored  over 400 publications; supervised 45 PhDs, and has held Visiting appointments at the University of Princeton, University of Southern California, Stirling, University of Electronic Science & Technology, Chengdu, China and Tianjin Normal University, China. He has been the 2013-16 Vice President (International) Royal Society of Edinburgh, and has been a Member of the International Committee (2019-2022) and the Research Committee (2022-) of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He was 2006-07 President IEEE Engineering Management Society; 1994-95 President IEEE Signal Processing Society. He has been 2009-2011 EMEA Regional Director for IEEE Communications Society and 2010-11 Vice President IEEE Educational Activities Board. Professor Durrani has been a Director of UK Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Scottish Funding Council (Member of Council) and UK National Commission for UNESCO. He has held visiting positions at Princeton University, University of Southern California, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and the Tianjin Normal University. He has helped establish the International Communications Signal Processing & Systems Conference (CSPS) which has been held each year in different parts of China since 2013. He developed the China AI International Conference in 2018, and was its general Co-Chair.

Professor Durrani is Fellow of IEEE, UK Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society of Edinburgh, IET, and The World Academy of Sciences; and is an International Member of the US National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2003, he was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to higher education and electronics research.
