Celebrate Engineering Ingenuity Day & IEEE MOVE Disaster Relief & Outreach Vehicle Visit
Come join us for a K-12 STEM event hosted by the Richmond Joint Engineers Council and the IEEE Richmond Section and take a tour of the IEEE MOVE Disaster Relief & Outreach vehicle.
Every year the Richmond Joint Engineers Council (of which the IEEE Richmond Section is a member) hosts a family STEM event where K-12 students and their families can learn about the many fields of engineering. There will be contests and activities that students can participate in and this year we are delighted to announce that IEEE's MOVE vehicle will be on site to show students and the general public how the technologies that IEEE members work on daily are also used to help the American Red Cross respond to disasters. (You can read more about MOVE at the end of this announcement.)
The American Society of Materials Engineers is hosting an Egg Drop Contest and the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting a Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest. Both contests are open to middle school and high school students. You can find details about those competitions at rjec.org/cei-day/. The IEEE Richmond Section will have "Squishy Circuits" that young children can build, "Snap Circuits" for children who are a bit older, and simple circuit boards that even older children can build. We will also have drawings to give out copies of the "Ada Twist, Scientist" and "Rosie Revere, Engineer" children's STEM books.
You do not need to register for this event, but if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact allen.jones@ieee.org.
The event is free and is open to the general public. Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone who you feel might be interested.
Can't make it to the Dewey Gottwald Center on this date?
The MOVE vehicle will also be at Virginia Commonwealth University the morning of Monday, February 13th. You can find details for that event at events.vtools.ieee.org/m/343647.
An International IEEE Program
Natural disasters can severely impact individuals, families, and communities around the world. The restoration of electricity and communications is often of primary importance during these challenging times because when power and connectivity is lost, people go without lights and the ability to access technology and a primary means of communication.
IEEE MOVE is primarily a Mobile Emergency Relief Program
The MOVE program is committed to assisting victims of and responders to natural disasters with short-term communications, technology, and power solutions. These temporary emergency relief provisions help people stay connected and ensure access to the help they need. Services include internet service, charging stations, and lighting resources.
MOVE also provides STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Education Outreach
When not deployed for disaster relief efforts, the IEEE MOVE vehicle is taken to schools, fairs, and other venues to educate the public, showcase, leading technologies, and raise awareness about the positive impact these technologies have on society.
