IEEE VTS Philadelphia Chapter Meeting


The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Philadelphia Chapter is holding a technical meeting.  The topic is Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Design – From Utility to Charger.  Our speakers are Dennis Balickie, Sr. Field Application Engineer, ABB, and Jeff L. Small, Sr., Curve Technology, LLC. 

The increased volume of electric vehicles has necessitated an expansion of EV charging sites throughout the country.  This seminar will explore the strategic and tactical design/engineering elements of the infrastructure of EV charging stations.  Key elements will include:

  • Accommodation for Different Site Requirements
  • Consideration of Standards, Utility, and Environmental Impact
  • Present and Future Market Trends

Attendees may apply for 1.0 PDH provided through the IEEE Certificates Program, accepted in all states.

Dennis Balickie Dennis Balickie of ABB

Biography:

Dennis Balickie is a graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA and has worked in the electrical industry his entire post-graduate career.  As an employee of General Electric/ABB for over 35 years, he has spent the past 25 years as an application engineer involved in the design and specification of electrical equipment ranging from 230 kV gas insulated switchgear to EV Chargers.  He has always worked for equipment manufacturers; including Reliance Electric, Square D, General Electric and ABB.  Past assignments include: factory requisition engineering, field service, technical sales, sales management, new product development, product marketing, application engineering, development of accredited PDH classes and project design/specification influence.  He has acquired one utility patent and three design patents during his time with GE/ABB.  Dennis has two adult sons and resides in Chester Springs, PA.

Jeff L. Small, Sr. Jeff L. Small, Sr. of Curve Technology, LLC

Biography:

Jeff Small, Sr., began his career with General Electric in 1998 as a regional application engineering resource for GE’s Adjustable Frequency Drive (AFD) business and had subsequent roles of increasing responsibility with GE in pricing analysis and product management before accepting the Florida Region Specification Engineering role in late 2004.  For 12 years as Senior Specification Engineer for GE’s Industrial Solutions business, Jeff worked closely with electrical consulting engineers, electrical contractors and electrical inspectors throughout the state to assist in the modeling and specifying of low and medium voltage electrical power distribution solutions for a variety of facility types. In July of 2015 Jeff accepted a new role within GE as the Senior Application Engineer for the Product Solutions OEM business team. Jeff retired from ABB in 2021 after 23+ years of service.  He is the Owner of Curve Technology, LLC a consulting firm advising clients such as Electrify America and others on power distribution topologies for EV sites.  Jeff and his wife Ana Teresa currently reside in Ormond Beach, FL.
