Introducing Career Journeys
The vision for Career Journeys is a series of fireside chats where students and early-career engineers can have frank discussions with experienced engineers about how experienced engineers discovered their careers. It is not a presentation or a lecture. We hope this will be small groups having a fireside chat with successful engineers. We can explore dreams, ambition, successes, setbacks, job searches, surviving interviews, recessions, corporate downsizing, good managers, bad managers ... nothing is sacred. What are your questions about the profession beyond graduation?
Experienced engineers all recall that as newly minted engineers, we were relatively clueless about how our careers would unfold. Few of us are lucky enough to retire from our first jobs. Most of us slowly discover our careers through a series of changes. We celebrate successes and survive setbacks. Talking about successes is easy. With this series, we also strive to be brave enough to share the seldom-told stories of our careers.
Career Journeys is a pilot.
- We can schedule follow-ups if the meetings get too large.
- We can schedule speakers that have careers that match your interest.
- We want these fireside chats to be comfortable for exploring your journey.

Career Journeys, the series launch
We will launch Career Journeys and lay the foundation for future sessions with other IEEE Senior Members. Mr. Chang's diverse work experience will provide a broad starting point for discovering the attendee's interests.
* What happens after your land your first job?
* What kind of career do you dream of?
Biography:
Mr. Chang has traveled three million miles in different engineering roles: hardware engineer (analog and digital), software engineer, manufacturing engineer, reliability engineer, systems engineer, systems installer, tech support manager, product manager, sales engineer, conference speaker, standards engineer (ANSI, ITU, IETF, IEEE802.11, Wi-Fi Alliance), entrepreneur/founder, applications architect, inventor, CTO, and consultant. Some of his contribution to standards have become requirements of every product world wide. He enjoys working with small companies from pre-revenue through $200 million, and experienced company exits from IPO and acquisitions. His student coop experience at Honeywell Information Systems and a post-acquisition stint at Cisco Systems reinforced his preference for building small companies. He now mentors entrepreneurs at the eForum (MIT) and PACE (UH).
