This presentation will provide a basic overview of intellectual property goals and processes within a company, with an emphasis on patents and new product development. I’ll cover basic patent definitions and processes, such as patentability, patent prosecution and patent protection around the globe. We’ll cover how a patent team partners with product development teams and others within a corporation. I’ll also discuss the value of patents and patent information for competitive intelligence, business development and as a source of technical information.

This presentation will provide a basic overview of intellectual property goals and processes within a company, with an emphasis on patents and new product development. I’ll cover basic patent definitions and processes, such as patentability, patent prosecution and patent protection around the globe. We’ll cover how a patent team partners with product development teams and others within a corporation. Biography:

Jim Johnson has been a patent researcher for thirty-five years – the past seventeen at Chamberlain. His principal responsibilities at Chamberlain are to provide leadership for patent and technical research and analytical services for the Chamberlain Group and its affiliates. Responsibilities include patent research (clearances, validity, state of the art), competitive intelligence, working closely with outside counsel on patent prosecution activities and acting as a consultant for new product development and engineering teams. Develop and promote patent strategies and processes across the company. Drive patent pathing and patent portfolio development. Consult with executive leadership, business development and other groups on a wide range of technical, business, and regulatory issues as well as acquisition due diligence.
