"Aspiring IISCian's Meet"

On March 21, 2023, an offline meeting was held at DA-229, in the Electrical Department of IIT Kanpur for the IEEE SBC members. Approximately 43 attendees were present to hear from Shubangi Baradwaj, a PhD scholar from the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in Bangalore, who was invited to speak about "Student Life at IISC". During her talk, Shubangi provided an overview of the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs available in various departments at IISC. She emphasized the industry collaborations and opportunities available for students, and highlighted the fact that all students at IISC work on funded industry projects. Additionally, she discussed the various student fellowships available at IISC. Shubangi then spoke about her department, the Center for Nanoscience and Engineering (CeNSE), and the interdisciplinary research opportunities available in the field of nanoscience. She highlighted the advantages of pursuing a PhD in her department, including the world-class equipment and clean room facilities available for fabricating semiconductor technology, as well as micro and nano characterization facilities. Shubangi emphasized that research expense and equipment availability is not a barrier for research at IISC. In conclusion, Shubangi discussed the placement opportunities for IISC students and spoke highly of the companies that come to IISC for placement. She mentioned that the alumni of her department have successful careers and are satisfied with the cutting-edge work they do. Overall, Shubangi's talk was informative and insightful, providing the IEEE SBC members at IIT Kanpur with valuable insights into the opportunities available at IISC. The members were grateful for her time and look forward to future collaborations with IISC.

Topic:

Aspiring IISCian's Meet

The vision of the division of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Sciences (EECS) at IISC is to strive to be among the world's foremost clusters of electrical, electronics, and computer science researchers, through pursuit of research excellence and promotion of innovation, by offering world class education to train future leaders in EECS, and by contributing to and applying science and technology breakthroughs and know-how for societal needs. In keeping with this vision, the Division has created multiple programs to cater to the research interests and career goals of students. These programs are offered by one or more of the four departments under the Division of EECS, namely the Departments of Electrical Engineering (EE), Electrical Communication Engineering (ECE), Electronic Systems Engineering (DESE), and Computer Science and Automation (CSA). In addition, the Division offers Ph.D. programs through its individual departments. Apart from this, IISC has also launched multiple technical programs in other cutting-edge domains as well. To help 'aspiring IIScian's decide on a Master's or PhD programs that meets their career aspirations, we are organizing Aspiring IIScian's Meet. The aim of this interactive session with the students is to help them meet their career aspirations by creating awareness on what IISC and its EECS division can offer and address their questions (as few mentioned below) to the best of my knowledge and direct them to the right source of information:
  • What exciting topics can you pursue as a Master's or a Ph.D. student at IISc?
  • What exciting research happens here?
  • Can you apply?
  • How to apply?
  • What do you know about IISc? And Bengaluru?
  • And the different departments/research groups here?
  • What is it like to be a graduate student at IISc?
  • How will it help your career?, etc.

Biography:

Ms. Shubhangi Bhardwaj is a senior research fellow in Centre for Nanoscience and Engineering, IISC Bangalore. Her research focuses on understanding the role of interface in device engineering specific to photovoltaic cells and mitigating the impact of poor interface on device performance. She has a rich experience in device (solar cell) fabrication and advanced optical, and electrical characterization such as MDP, XPS, UPS, ss-PL, TRPL, PITS, CV, IV and EQE. She completed her master's from IIT Guwahati in the field of Energy Sciences. Her masters research focusses on understanding the influence of deposition parameters on the quality of transport layer used in perovskite solar cell (like TiO2) deposited by RF Sputtering. She has been awarded with young scientist's award in the year of 2018. She is an active IEEE member and a president of IEEE IISC HKN and IEEE IISC Nano council and Sensor Council. She has been provided with IEEE HKN honorarium lifetime membership. She also holds close to three years of industrial experience too.
