Advancing Smart Power and Energy Innovation to Meet Societal Challenges
Energy is the basis and driving force for the progress of human civilization and is related to human survival and development. At present, energy security is facing crises and challenges, then reform and innovation are needed to achieve new development. This report will introduce the responsibilities and development of the IEEE PES organization, as well as the energy technology innovations and efforts made by IEEE PES in response to the energy crisis, including how to realize energy transition and use advanced technologies to help regions around the world use cheap and clean energy more safely and reliably, improving energy efficiency, and promoting green and sustainable development.

Jessica Bian, Ph.D., is currently the vice president of Grid-X Partners. She once served as a senior consultant to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and as director of the Evaluation Department and Emergency Management Department of North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). From 1981 to 1985, she received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Taiyuan University of Technology. From 1985 to 1988, she got a master's degree in electrical engineering from China Electric Power Research Institute, and from 1989 to 1992, she got a doctorate in electrical engineering from Tulane University in the United States.
Academic achievements: She has presided over the development of 18 industry reliability indicators and three comprehensive indexes for determining the reliability, operation adequacy, and related risks of the interrelated North American bulk power system. She started her career at Westinghouse Electric and was involved in generator design and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) applications. Also worked at PJM Interconnection and ERCOT on real-time operations support resource economic scheduling and operator training simulator projects. Dr. Bian has obtained two US patents and has published more than 80 articles in various journals, periodicals, and journals. Due to her outstanding technical achievements, she became the first outstanding woman to receive the IEEE PES annual award, "Wanda Reder Pioneer in Power Award," in 2014, and was elected as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) president in 2020. She became the first Chinese president elected in the history of IEEE PES.
