IEEE Robotics & Automation Society (RAS) organized a farewell event to bid farewell to the outgoing 
students of IEEE RAS and announce the list of selected office bearers for the session 2023-24. The event 
aimed to recognize the contributions of the outgoing members and welcome the new members to IEEE 
RAS.
The event took place at UG classroom of Electronics Engineering Department and was hosted by Kashish, a
management member of IEEE RAS. The event began with Kashish providing an overview of IEEE RAS 
and its significance in promoting robotics and automation. She highlighted the achievements and initiatives 
undertaken by the outgoing students during their tenure.

Speakers and Highlights:
1. Prof. Naushad Alam (Chapter Advisor IEEE RAS ZHCET): appreciated the efforts and initiatives of 
the outgoing students for their dedication and efforts in advancing the goals of IEEE RAS. He 
extended a warm welcome to the new members and encouraged them to continue the legacy of 
excellence.
2. Prof. Ekram Khan (Chairman Department of Electronics Engineering, Senior Member IEEE):
commended the outgoing students for their remarkable contributions to IEEE RAS. He emphasized

the importance of active participation in IEEE RAS activities and praised the outgoing students for 
their accomplishments.
3. Prof. Mohd Rihan (Vice Chair, IEEE U.P. Section): addressed the issue of declining interest in 
engineering among young students. He shared valuable insights and strategies to address this 
problem and foster the growth of IEEE RAS.

Recognition of Outgoing Office Bearers: 
Kashish (Management Team Member, IEEE RAS, ZHCET) proceeded to recognize the outgoing office 
bearers and invited the respective dignitaries to present them with certificates. The following individuals 
were acknowledged:
• Zahid Hussain (Outgoing President of IEEE RAS)
• Mohd. Zain (Outgoing Vice President of IEEE RAS)
• Ifrah Andleeb (Outgoing Secretary of IEEE RAS)
• Syed Kazim (Outgoing Joint Secretary of IEEE RAS)

Words of Wisdom:
1. Zahid Hussain (Outgoing President of IEEE RAS): Zahid shared his reflections and experiences 
during his tenure as the President of IEEE RAS. He expressed gratitude to the team and encouraged 
the incoming members to seize the opportunities that IEEE RAS offers.
2. Yusuf Ahmed Khan (Incoming President of IEEE RAS): Yusuf addressed the attendees, expressing 
his gratitude for the trust placed in him as the incoming President. He shared his vision and plans for 
the upcoming session, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation.

The farewell event organized by IEEE RAS provided a platform to appreciate the outgoing students and 
welcome the new members. It showcased the achievements of the outgoing office bearers and highlighted 
their contributions to the growth of IEEE RAS. The event also set the stage for the incoming office bearers 
to take charge and continue the legacy of excellence in robotics and automation.
Overall, the event served as a motivating and inspiring gathering, fostering a sense of unity and enthusiasm 
among the attendees. It reinforced the commitment of IEEE RAS to nurture talent and promote 
advancements in the field of robotics and automation. A total of 23 members attended the event.

Prof. Naushad Alam Prof. Naushad Alam

Biography:

Prof. Naushad Alam received B. Tech. (ECE) degree from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi ,  and M. Tech. (ECSD) degree from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. He earned Ph.D. degree in Microelectronics from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India. His doctoral work was on nanoscale circuit design considering the impact of process-induced mechanical stress. He has filed 2 Indian Patents and published 29 research papers in SCI indexed journals that include 10 IEEE Transactions. In addition, he has published 5 Book Chapters and 33 papers in reputed conferences such as IEEE ISQED, IEEE ISCAS, IEEE TENCON, IWPSD, VDAT, IEEE ISED, IEEE UPCON etc. He has received four Best Paper Awards at ICSCI-2008, IMPACT-2013, VDAT-2015 and IMPACT 2017 respectively and delivered eleven invited talks at BIT Mesra (2014), MNIT Jaipur (2015), SPIT Mumbai (2015), ZHCET Aligarh (2016), SPIT Mumbai (2020), IIITDM Gwalior (2022), respectively. He has supervised three PhD theses and sixteen M Tech dissertations in the area of device-circuit co-design and presently supervising two PhD students. He has also successfully executed a UGC funded research project on TFET based SRAM cell design for IoT Applications. His research interests include device-circuit co-design, robust nanoscale circuit design, low power circuit design, PVT tolerant circuit design, Near-Threshold/Sub-Threshold circuit design etc. Presently, he is a Professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.

Prof. Ekram Khan Prof. Ekram Khan

Biography:

Prof. Ekram Khan obtained his Ph. D degree in Electronics Engineering in the area of Image/Video Coding and Transmission from University of Essex, Colchester (U.K.) in 2003. He has joined the Department of Electronics Engineering, AMU Aligarh as a Lecturer in 1993, promoted to reader in 2003 and is currently working as a Professor since March 2009. He was a recipient of the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship (1999-2002) to pursue his Ph. D. from University of Essex, UK. He has authored and co-authored over 120 papers in refereed reputed journals (IEEE Transactions on CSVT, Multimedia, Broadcasting, IET Image Processing, IET Communications, IET Electronics Letters, etc) and international conference proceedings. His areas of research are low complexity image/video coding, video transmission over wireless networks, video streaming and bio-medical image processing. He has received a research award from IBM J. T. Watson research lab, USA for the best disruptive idea during ICME-2002. During his stay at Essex, UK, he was involved with a European Union project (the MELISA project) examining segmentation and tracking of players in football match videos. He was one of the co-investigator of a short-term project funded by Office of Communication (Ofcom), UK and worked in collaboration with researchers at University of Essex, UK. He was the principal investigator of a successfully completed AICTE (India) funded project (2006-2008). He has spends summers of 2005 and 2006 as academic visitor to University of Essex (funded by Royal Society, UK). He has delivered many invited talks at national and international levels. He is a senior member of IEEE (USA), life member of IETE (India) and life member of SSI (India).

Prof. Mohd Rihan Prof. Mohd Rihan

Biography:

Prof. Mohammad Rihan is a Professor of Electrical Engineering with experience of more than 21 years. He is Gold Medalist of B.Tech. (Electrical Engineering) and has done significant research work in the areas of smart grid and Solar Energy; both areas under National missions.  He Is also the Founder Director and Coordinator of the centre for Grid Integrated Green and Renewable Energy in the campus to address the research challenges presented by high penetration of renewable energy in the grid. He is an elected Fellow of the IET(UK), IE(India), and IETE. He is Senior Member of IEEE and elected vice chair of executive committee of IEEE UP Section for 2021-2023. He is elected vice chair of executive committee of Delhi local network of IET(UK) for 2023.

 

He has led the integration of 6.5MWp solar PV plants in the AMU campus distribution grid; the largest such installation in any academic institution in the country. It includes a project of Rs. 20 Cr. for 3.3 MWp solar farm; a unique installation in any academic institute in the country. He has also worked as Visiting Scientist at National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), MNRE. He has established a Centre for Training on Solar PV in collaboration with Skill Council, Green Jobs, Government of India  India. He has also completed a project on Green Campus funded by MNRE. Under this project energy conservation target has been defined for making AMU a Green Campus. 
Prof. Rihan is also heading the entire electricity setup; both conventional and renewable of the university since Dec 2015 as Member Incharge. The campus has a huge electricity network of 8.5MVA capacity and annual budget of about Rs. 30 Cr. He acts as the technical, financial, and administrative head of the department and report to the vice chancellor; the executive head of the university. He is leading a team of 122 employees including Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, Accounts staff and other technical staff. His responsibilities in this role requires ensuring that all related works and purchases in the department are done adhering to the technical and financial guidelines formed by the Government of India. He is a Member of the Building Committee; the committee which accords technical and financial approval to all construction/renovation works in the campus as per GFR and Central Public Works Department (CPWD) norms of the Government of India. He has to oversee the utilization of the funds as per norms and devise and implement energy conservation measures in the campus. 

Prof. Rihan is member secretary of Central Project Implementation and Monitoring Committee of the university which is responsible for allocation, evaluation and execution of consultancy work related to projects of national importance like smart city. 

 

Dr. Rihan has authored a book on Green Energy Transition in India-Including the success story of AMU and another book on Advanced Control Systems. He has contributed an invited chapter on Applications and Requirements of Smart Grid in a book published by Springer Nature.  He has established a new Virtual Instrumentation and Smart Systems lab in the department.
