This event is brought to you as part of the Inclusion and Accessibility Webinar Series offered by the IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board (HTB) & SIGHT Taenzer Grant Program, made possible by the Jon C. Taenzer Memorial Fund of the IEEE FoundationThe program focuses on empowering technologists around the globe to advance assistive technologies and technological solutions for persons with disabilities and their communities, and supporting engineers in low-resource countries. Together with IEEE SA DIITA, we present:  on 8 August 2023 at 7:30pm EDT with Aman (Amanda) Deol Dhillon, IEEE New Jersey Coast Section SIGHT Group member.

“Topics in Adaptive Designs for Accessibility: IEEE Dignity, Identity, Inclusion, Trust, and Agency (DIITA) Developing the Standard PAR 2998, Interface for the Blind.

Together with: IEEE Computer Society Leaders & Luminaries Podcast, IEEE Region 1 PACE, IEEE PACE SIGHT Group, and IEEE Women in Engineering WIE.

Amanda Deol Dhillon, IEEE SIGHT Group Member, will describe her project to design and develop an interface for people with blindness and visual impairment and how she led a team to bring about a new IEEE Standard. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people were unable to participate in the workplace because their accommodations were not provided to them in their home or elsewhere. This inspired Amanda to raise awareness and to provide the accommodation to people wherever they go. She followed this up by initiating a project to develop an IEEE Standard through the Dignity, Identity, Inclusion, Trust, and Agency (DIITA) organization, now PAR 2998. This recommended practice provides a consistent method to enable web content and web applications to be accessible for people with disabilities, including blindness and visual impairment by enabling text to speech, captioning of images and auto-detection of user accessibility limitations that may exist. In this Event, Amanda shares her experiences and recommendations.

Something the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light was how the lack of web accessibility is affecting people with disabilities, especially those who use assistive technology. Organizations and government entities all over the world are beginning to understand the importance inclusion, and the importance of being compliant and providing accessible websites, tools, and apps.

Amanda recognized the need for IEEE Standards in this area and working with the IEEE Dignity, Identity, Inclusion, Trust, and Agency (DIITA) organization, she established a new IEEE Standards PAR 2998: This recommended practice provides a consistent method to enable web content and web applications to be accessible for people with disabilities, including blindness and visual impairment by enabling text to speech, captioning of images and auto-detection of user accessibility limitations that may exist.
