Presenter: C. J. Kikkert, Adjunct A/Prof Adelaide Uni and James Cook Uni. BE, PhD, LSMIEEE, FIEAust.

Abstract: Climate change and electricity costs require a change of electricity generation from fossil fuel to renewable sources. The lecture gives an overview of Australia’s and in particular South Australia’s progress towards the goal of a renewable grid. South Australia is a world leader with a >70% renewable electricity grid and has had a net negative state demand on several occasions.

In 2000 Coal, Gas and Imports provided one third of SA’s energy each. Now there is little net imports/exports and no Coal. The savings of electrification and how the energy transformation requires storage and load shifting to maintain network stability and reliability are discussed. The requirement for “inertia”, different options for efficient storage techniques and the use of tariffs to encourage load shifting are described.

Brief Bio: Cornelis (Keith) Kikkert, has been an academic since 1970 at both Adelaide University and James Cook University. For 7 years he was the head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at JCU. He has written a book on RF electronics (4 ed), 4 book chapters, more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and is the inventor of 5 patents.
