360' Mentoring: An Organic Fertilizer for Your Career to Grow and Flourish

Plants appear to grow effortlessly all around us except in Deserts and Rocks. But, when you try to grow them, you face a lot of challenges, even to maintain established trees. I bought my house with 17 productive fruit trees, none left now.  Who attends to them in the forest? Animals, birds, insects and even “other plants” help the forest thrive.

Growing and maintaining Careers is the same thing. Just getting a degree, landing a job, and executing assignments does not guarantee a successful career. A lot of nurturing goes into it. Many who have become successful will often give credit to their mentors for many of their accomplishments.

This presentation will attempt to offer an insight into finding and making the most of mentors throughout your Engineering Journey.

360' Mentoring: An Organic Fertilizer for Your Career to Grow and Flourish

How one needs to “Fertilize” the career journey all the way from college to retirement and beyond for a very “productive” outcome.

Chitra Venkatraman retired after a four-decade long career in the telecommunication industry. She has a BE in electrical engineering (1977) from the University of Madras and MSEE from Rutgers University. Following a decade of work as a distinguished member of technical staff at Lucent Technologies, she led teams of engineers through several wireless deployments as a technical manager.  As the wireless industry was evolving rapidly, she developed test methodologies to integrate various parts of the Base station - Digital, Analog and RF interfaces including compliance to Air Interface standards. As such, she is one of the early cellular system pioneers. Under her leadership, her team covered all the technologies from Analog, CDMA, TDMA, UMTS and LTE. She worked extensively with wireless service providers from around the world including TATA and Reliance India.

Chitra Venkataraman is a Senior Member of the IEEE. She is currently serving as the IEEE North Jersey Section’s Employment and Career Services, Pre-University and WIE Chair. She represents IEEE at various STEM events around NJ. Since her retirement in 2018, Chitra has been pursuing her passion of volunteering in Humanitarian services and STEM fields. She is an American Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer, a mentor at the Students2Science organization, a corporate mentor to NJIT-Society of Women Engineers and a Volunteer STEM mentor at the Liberty Science Center.  On a personal level, she enjoys competitive Table Tennis, Origami, Running, Yoga and Gardening.
