Mobile Material Characterization and Localization by Electromagnetic Sensing (Register now)

Millimeter-wave and THz systems can cover extremely wide bandwidths that can be used for high data rate transmission or electromagnetic sensing, material characterization, localization, and fingerprinting. In particular, silicon-based millimeter-wave electronic transceivers provide the high level of integration required for truly mobile material characterization. Since localization and mapping require estimation of object position and pose, multichannel systems and synthetic aperture methods are of great interest for mobile millimeter-wave sensors to provide spatial resolution. In this talk, we will present methods for material characterization with special emphasis on non-contact approaches in free space. In addition, frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems and their applicability for imaging and characterization tasks at frequencies beyond 100 GHz will be discussed.
