The world is facing numerous challenges across all societal sectors that demand our immediate attention. Two major modern-day challenges are, effectively addressing the needs of an ageing population while simultaneously striving for a net-zero carbon future, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions to provide sustainable healthcare and support systems for elderly individuals.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), in which physical components, such as devices, and sensors, are interconnected with digital technologies, enabling data exchange, communication, and control, offer potential solutions to both challenges. This integration allows for real-time monitoring, analysis, and optimisation of physical processes, leading to enhanced efficiency, automation, and decision-making in various sectors, including healthcare and energy management. CPSs can therefore enable personalised healthcare delivery, remote patient monitoring, and optimised energy management, leading to improved health outcomes for the elderly while minimising carbon emissions. In this talk we will explore multiple use cases to showcase the potential of CPSs, supported by the Internet of Things (IoT), Radio Frequency (RF)-sensing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), in realising innovative solutions for modern-day challenges, particularly in the healthcare and energy management sectors. The use cases include but are not limited to contactless activity monitoring for risk of fall assessment using Channel State Information (CSI) extracted from Wi-Fi signals, and intelligent energy sensing to reduce energy waste and improve energy usage behaviour amongst individual energy users.
