Title: A Hierarchical Control Strategy for Grid Services using a Meter-based-Controller: Testbed-Based Validation

Description: With the rapidly increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the residential electricity sector, it is important for utilities to identify or manage those behind-the-meter (BTM) DERs synergistically. These DERs may not properly contribute to the benefits of the premises or to the grid if they are not managed optimally; instead, their suboptimal operation may jeopardize grid operations or deprive the grid and the premise from receiving the maximum possible benefits. Besides, there are controllable loads in the premise that can be coordinated with DER operations for the abovementioned purposes. With the advent of grid edge hardware and communication protocols, optimal frameworks for autonomous operation of assets and information exchange between the premise and the utility can provide grid services such as demand response. In this presentation, Shakil will talk about a meter-based-controller that can coordinate residential assets for increased visibility and controllability for the purpose of demand response and home energy management.

A Hierarchical Control Strategy for Grid Services using a Meter-based-Controller: Testbed-Based Validation

Shakil Hossan is currently working as an Sr Engineering Specialist at Eaton Research Labs (ERL). Prior to joining at ERL, he worked as a Senior Engineer at different engineering departments in Commonwealth Edison Co. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2018. Prior to that he received his MS and BS in Electrical Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA and North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, respectively. He also worked as a wireless engineer at Huawei Technologies prior to starting as his graduate studies. He is a senior member of IEEE and serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE transactions on Sustainable Energy. He has also been the founding member of IEEE standard on Conservation Voltage Reduction Measurement and Verification (P3102) and served as a chair between 2021 to 2022. Recently, he has served as a publication chair for IEEE Green Technologies Conference 2023. His current research interests are mostly in distribution systems modeling and applications development considering the integration of behind-the-meter distributed energy resources and different energy efficiency techniques.
