San Diego Test Equipment Symposium (SDTES)
The IEEE San Diego Product Safety and EMC chapter invites you to the San Diego Test Equipment Symposium (SDTES) on October 17, 2023 in San Diego, California.
SDTES is a test and measurement exhibition that features presentations from experts in EMC, RF safety, power electronics, electrical, communications, NDT, environmental, and general purpose testing. Guests are invited to explore the exhibit hall, where top manufacturers of cutting-edge test instruments talk shop and give demonstrations, and are treated to a free, locally-catered lunch along with beer from a San Diego brewery. Networking is encouraged.
ATEC hosts SDTES at its company headquarters in Sorrento Valley, a neighborhood nestled in the heart of San Diego's tech community and not far from La Jolla.

The Future Of HV EV Testing
Jason Smith, President/Engineer, Absolute EMC
Jason Smith Graduated with a BS from the University of Delaware in 1997, majoring in Engineering Technology. Overall, Jason has over 25 years of experience in the EMC industry. First testing and managing at an independent EMC test lab in Pennsylvania. Later becoming an Applications Engineering Manager for a prominent EMC and RF test equipment manufacturer, he has been a member of the USNC (US National Committee) to SC77B and SC77C, a participating member of WG10 (IEC 61000-4-3, -6), and the SAE AE2 Lightning committee. He has worked for some of the industry's leading EMC/EMI manufacturers in a managing role.
Jason created Absolute EMC Llc. in July 2018; for meeting the many requirements of the EMC industry. They offer sales & consulting services centered around the proper selection and use of EMC test equipment for IEC, MIL, automotive, and avionics testing. He provides a very broad range of EMC testing products for full compliance and pre-compliance testing. From his past experiences working for manufacturers in the industry, he saw a lack of support during and after the sale—Absolute EMC vowes to always support their customers with technical help and quick answers.
The Future of HV EV Testing
Standards are continually evolving as more feedback from more and more Electric Vehicles (EV) are in use. LV 123 was one of the first standards released, and today, the newest release of ISO 21498-2 has evolved the requirements. Additionally, new standards from OEM manufacturers' requirements go beyond these sine wave ripple testing, adding trapezoid, triangle, and double exponential pulses. We will discuss the limitations of some coupling technologies and how the limitations have been solved. The new technology available allows for more expanded testing. This opens testing to allow for more real-world transients to be easily created and coupled.
Top 10 Considerations To Ensure A Successful RF Shielded Enclosure Project
Leo Botero, AIA, Principal Project Engineer, ETS-Lindgren |
Leonardo (Leo) Botero is a Principal Project Engineer with ETS-Lindgren based in Wood Dale, Illinois. Mr. Botero has more than 10 years of experience in design engineering for RF Shielded Enclosures as well as data center design and construction. In this position, working with the test and measurement team at ETS-Lindgren, he is responsible for chamber design, drawing coordination, and material release for production. Mr. Botero provides detailed customer support for chambers and components such as electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and shielded components, as well as facility interfaces. He is responsible for large scale and complex projects as well as fast-track projects. Working closely with architects and building contractors, he ensures seamless integration of the chamber with the customer’s parent building. These chamber types include anechoic, acoustic, SCIF, tapered, all-welded, and modular RF shielded enclosures. His customers represent manufacturers of commercial electronic products, aerospace/government organizations, and the automotive industry. He is a licensed architect and member of the American Institute for Architects (AIA). Mr. Botero has extensive experience in principles of RF design and in Building Information Modeling (BIM) design techniques. He has achieved professional certification for Revit Architecture. His education includes a BS degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign, Illinois. |

Advanced RF Safety Training & RF Measurement Techniques
Gerry Spinelli, North American Sales Manager, Narda Safety Test Solutions |
Gerry Spinelli has dedicated 20 plus years to Narda STS solutions as the North America Sales Manager. Narda provides test equipment designed for EMF safety, RF measurement, and EMC testing. They are recognized as a leader in providing high quality, application-tailored test solutions. An industry-recognized SEM on RF radiation Safety and RF Radiation Surveys, Gerry has taught more than 100 seminars on RF Awareness Training and RF Safety and is a guest speaker annually at the IBEW Safety Caucus. Advanced RF Safety Training & RF Measurement Techniques This presentation is aimed to provide a more in-depth understanding and knowledge of RF radiation/RF safety: what it is and how it reacts to the human body (both biologically and when taking measurements). Many believe they only need to follow rules and procedures, with minimum RF safety training. We will cover both theoretical and practical examples so attendees can see the benefits and have a clear understanding of how RF safety applies to them in their everyday work. Main subjects covered in this session include biological effects, RF safety standards, RF test equipment, RF survey/measurements & techniques, and RF safety programs. |
