Dr. Gord Lovegrove of UBC Okanagon

Topic:

Hydrail Passenger Tram-Train Technology

A B.C. railway’s fleet of locomotives may one day be powered by hydrogen if a collaboration with UBC Okanagan succeeds. And the signs indicate it will.
A UBCO team led by engineering professor Gord Lovegrove is about to start testing a hydrogen-powered system on locomotives run by the Southern Railway of British Columbia.
The New Westminster-based railway provides freight service to the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley and connections to major railways across North America.

These won’t be the first locomotives that run on hydrogen power, but it still is a new technology. Zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-powered trains exist in Europe and are being tested in North America. Hydrogen power is also being tested now on a passenger train in Quebec.
