From Lockheed Martin’s Gravity Systems brochure: Centuries after Sir Isaac Newton described the principle of gravity, Lockheed Martin’s Gravity Systems business is leveraging his findings to create new military and commercial products. The technology builds upon the fact that gravity varies over the earth’s surface due to changes in rock density, voids, and other naturally occurring phenomenon. Lockheed Martin’s gravity gradiometers are used to measure this gravity variation and application of this information provides insight into the characteristics and makeup of underground and undersea geologic structures. This information is used for a variety of applications, including natural resource exploration, navigation, and underground detection and can be deployed on moving vehicles, including ships, submarines and aircraft.
