The ambition of providing ubiquitous, fast and mobile communication services to all types of devices, such as handheld, vehicular and IoT, has resulted in tremendous complexity in our wireless networks, and the trend is only likely to accelerate. As a result, it is becoming exponentially harder to create good analytical models to describe the behavior of systems. The situation is ripe for the utilization of machine learning and deep learning-based solutions. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) approaches are being attempted or postulated in almost all subsystems of the network, and in all stages of the network lifecycle. There are some major challenges that emerge in this new paradigm, from the R&D, operational as well as from the performance characterization and testing points of view. In this talk we take a bird’s eye tour of the AI/ML landscape in wireless networks.

Dr. Balaji Raghothaman Dr. Balaji Raghothaman of Keysight Technologies

Biography:

Dr. Balaji Raghothaman is Chief Technologist, Network Solutions at Keysight Technologies, where he shapes the company’s 6G technology strategy and roadmap, and leads key industry and university collaborations and early proof-of-concepts. Prior to joining Keysight, Balaji was an Engineering Fellow at Commscope. He has had a long career in wireless R&D, including stints at Texas Instruments, Nokia Corporate R&D, InterDigital, and Airvana.

Balaji is active in O-RAN where he is co-leader of the Research Platforms stream in the nextG Research Group. He is a member of the FCC Technical Advisory Council’s AI/ML subgroup. He also contributes to NextG Alliance. 

Balaji has a PhD in Telecommunications Signal Processing at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has more than 65 patents (granted and pending) and 30+ publications to his name. Balaji lives in the Philadelphia metro area.
